but any way you look at it the manufacturer won't support these options. in fact I think you can even find some way to get the firmware on the 3r party hard drives. find some sleds from old hard drives on ebay and save some money. I see people trying to use the non hp drives all day long.

but i work with them building servers for large solutions. also if the drive does work there is a chance that the drive will be worn down faster than it should. if the controller looks for that functionality on the drive and does not find it you have a percent chance that the drive will pull through that and work. for example ILO will send you warnings if a drive is going to fail. the controller and hard drive will interact with ILO (integrated lights out) which has features built in for server management. this is a feature that hp offers with there servers. this has not been put on the drives to disuade you from using non hp drives. The issue as far as hp has responded is that the hp hard drives are preloaded with firmware to interact directly with the hp controllers and servers. I only did a casual performance test with Bart's Stuff Test to satisfy me that performance wasn't atrocious so I don't have anything definitive. Mervincm's message had me worried about an across-the-board performance hit but if memory serves, there wasn't a performance hit on the SAS-only arrays on the same controller. The other has a single 640GB WD laptop 2.5-in Scorpio Blue in there for non-critical "stuff" (again with this server, the other arrays are SAS). One has a pair of HP OEM 500GB SATA drives in a RAID1 array for a 40GB C: boot partition and the rest a big 400GB D: drive for non-high-performance "stuff" (the rest of the arrays are SAS). I now have 2 D元80 G6 boxes with (some) SATA drives and a P410 integrated controller.

I have no idea if the new P410 is the same but you might want to check into it. Some rev's of the card support some SATA 2 features (NCQ), but all are limited to the slower speeds. One thing to note is that with the P400, SATA is limited to SATA1 speeds. If others who have tried other brands of SSD and they work, I'd be interested in knowing. So I'm thinking that the HP raid controller WILL work with SATA drives, just not with a Kingston 64GB SSD. I put it into the tray and it was also recognized. In case this was an HP conspiracy to force the useo of only "HP drives ", I dug out a 2.5-in 250GB SATA drive from a Lenovo laptop. The raid controller still did not recognize the SSD.īy the way, my test SSD was an inexpensive one: Kingston SSDnow V-Series 64GB. Thinking this could be an issue, I put the SSD back in the same tray, powered off the server, slid it in and powered the server on. When I orginally put in the SSD without success, I did it "hot", server not powered off, whereas with the above 320GB mechanical drive, I powered off the server first. FYI, the label on this drive says: Hitachi HTS7232L9A360 7200rpm Took out a 320GB stock drive out of a new not-yet-deployed HP Compaq 6530b laptop, put it into the tray and the P410i RAID controller recognized it and offered to create a RAID1 volume.
